The other night I couldn't sleep. Carly J was snoring (and scratching her nose with the back of my head), we'd been given some fantastic news, met with an arranger for Bo Banta, and my brain was whizzing around in my head like a kid on undiluted red cordial.
So instead of sleeping I picked up my iPhone and started doing some research. See, there are two things that I feel I really need right now; a bicycle, and a shiny new camera. So I figured it was the perfect time to find the perfect bicycle and camera for me!
Lekker - Double Dutch
Firstly, the bicycle. I'm after something retro looking, very attractive, easy to ride (ie. no fixies!) and comfortable. I want something that I'll want to ride and show off. I'd first seen a Lekker at a mates bike shop a couple of weeks back and instantly fell in love. So sleek and shiny, how I'd love to show that off around Newtown! I did a bit of reading up and found that it's a Dutch designed commuter bike originally designed in 1885. It features:
- A locking system that stands up to the thieves of Amsterdam - so thinking it'll do okay in Sydney
- Wireless LED lights so I'll never get caught in the dark
- A chain guard so my clothes won't get caught and torn (like Carly Js jeans did yesterday)
- A rear rack that'll fit a basket and is apparently strong enough to hold a real live human being
Plus, check her out - I'm so freakin sold!
Panasonic DMC GF1
So now for the camera. I've wanted a DSLR for a while, but the price tage and size of most is a bit of a turn off, so how thrilled was I when I found out there was something inbetween! They're called ICL Cameras - or Inter-Changeable-Lens Cameras. They feature picture quality comparable to a basic DSLR, minus the optical viewfinder and mirror box, so they're much more compact.
After reading a butt-load of reviews comparing the Panasonic DMC GF1 to the Olympus Pen I decided that the Panasonic was a clear winner. It works well in settings with poor lighting (ie. my house), is reliable, and comes with the option of two lenses - a 20mm pancake lens, or a 14-45mm zoom lense (I decided on the 20mm as reviews claim the zoom is of average quality, plus most of my photos will be short distance stills). Look how pretty it is:
It's compatible with all micro four thirds lenses - apparently a very new type of lense created only by Panasonic and Olympus, and I've already got my eye on an Olympus Macro lens (no Panasonic macro lenses available as yet). Ooooh, I can't wait to take awesome pictures with this baby!
Now, it's time to start saving. I'll let you know how I go...
