DIY Costume Inspiration

So back in the day, when I was in a band, one of the things that excited me was the prospect of designing and creating my own stage wear. Funsies! So when we disbanded I was pretty disappointed that I would no longer be able to do this. Until I had an idea.

Lately I've been thinking about doing a few shows with my ukulele, just pop songs and whatnot. The great thing about this, apart from the fact that it's heaps of fun, is that I get to get all excited about stage costumes again! Hurrah!

I'm still very much in the brainstorming stages, though I do have a name in mind which I will share with you in time, but I'm thinking a combination of traditional sequiney burlesque style mixed with a whole lot of DIY ethic - ie. patchwork, crochet etc. And of course, a butt-load of colour!

Raggedy Ann

Remember the lovely new dress that I wrote about here? Well... I fixed it! Sort of. It took me a while, given that I was simultaneously sewing and facebook chatting, so I royally buggered it up more than once. But I sure did get there in the end, and it's now exactly the perfect length, I love how the black really balances out the dress. So anyway, I wore it to Chicks with Picks yesterday.

Oh wow, how I love it so! It makes me feel a little like Raggedy Ann for some reason...

Oh My Stars...

Guess what I just found out (via the very lovely Jordan of Oh Happy Day)... Apparently all pictures taken by the Hubble Telescope are public domain, which means that you can have an ahhh-mazing photo of the stars all of your own for no more than the price of printing! Holy wow, I want one of these. I picked out my favourites for you below, or you can go and have a browse for yourself here.

One Thrifty Day

I was on my way to grab some shampoo down the road today. I'd left the house deciding that I would not come home with anything more than shampoo, conditioner, and perhaps a few grocery bits and pieces. Then I walked past Vinnies. Baahhhh! I can not walk past that place without going in and grabbing a whole bunch of stuff. It really is one of the best Op Shops around, this little one out in the nearly-burbs of Sydney.

So anyway, I found this stuff:

The sweetest little crocheted baby blanket, which will cover my ugly bedside table forevermore... Or until I get a prettier bedside table. Which ever happens first. Likely the former.

Another intricately crocheted cushion cover! I'm yet to sew inserts for the two I already have, but have grand plans to whip out the machine today...

I looooove the colour of this skirt, and the big pockets. Not quite sold on the draw string waist, but for $5 who cares. I have a plan anyway. Expect to see this baby in an outfit/ before & after post soon.

Awesome ex-coffee jar. This will become my new sweets jar. Or biscuit (cookie) jar.
