A little over two years ago I announced to my parents that for my coming birthday I'd really like some Roller Derby skates, as when I moved to Sydney in the coming weeks I'd really like to join a derby team. They laughed. Hard. See, the thing is, when I was much younger not only was I extremely accident prone (seriously. I once sat on a jaffle-iron fresh from the fire when camping. Yowch), but this was accompanied by a tendancy to wildly overreact to each little cut, scraps and scratch that I procured. It drove them up the freakin' wall. They'd also recently watched an ABC feature of Derby and had come to the conclusion that Derby skaters were "a bunch of thugs".
I never got the skates, partly because I really needed some new clothes for my birthday, but also because it became apparent, after some research, that Roller Derby is a huge committment, one that I just couldn't fit in at that time (though one day would REALLY like to!).
So, to the point, last Saturday our brilliantly amazing friend Alanna hooked us up with some sweet tix to the Derby, and I took photos (not great photos mind you - the distance and lack of telephoto lense made that tricky, but they came out alright I reckonz).
There were two bouts on the night, the first was a mini bout between the D'Viants and the Western Sydney Rollers, then the main bout between the Beauty School Knockouts (Best.Uniforms.Ever) and the Screaming Assault Sirens. If you'd like more into about the Sydney Rollers Derby League go here.
